Soil Type

Fertile, well drained soil

Lilium should be planted at a depth of about two to three times the size of the bulb, usually 15cm, and apart at approx 60cm. They excel in fertile, well drained soil and should be planted with peat/leaf mould. A bed of sand or ashes under the bulb is often useful. If planting the lilium in pots, you should pot up with a good quality compost, and leave in a cold frame or a similar frost free place (cover with ashes, sand etc.). You can bring into the warmth once growth begins to appear, and water regularly.
Once the growth begins to appear you can water regularly and it is often recommended that you apply a liquid fertiliser every two weeks. The flowering potential will increase as they become more established.
